Nintendo Fans Get First Hands-On With Switch 2 Amid Tariff Concerns
Nintendo fans in Japan got an exciting sneak peek at the highly anticipated Switch 2 during a special pre-launch event near Tokyo, but growing concerns about tariffs and potential price hikes are casting a shadow over the release.
Nintendo Switch 2: High Demand, High Expectations
On Saturday, eager gamers lined up outside the Makuhari Messe convention center to try out the new console, enjoying titles like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bonanza, and other exclusive games. Despite concerns over tariffs that could raise prices globally, the enthusiasm among Nintendo fans remains strong.
Nintendo has already reported over 2.2 million applications for Switch 2 purchase lotteries in Japan — an overwhelming demand they admit they cannot fully meet.
"Honestly, I didn’t think I had a shot. Everyone on social media was saying they missed out, so I figured I would too," said Hyuma Hashiguchi, 28, a lucky lottery winner.
Tariff Worries Loom Over Launch
With memories of former President Donald Trump’s trade policies still fresh, some consumers are anxious about potential price surges for not just consoles, but also accessories.
"Since Mr. Trump became president, tariffs have gone up. I am concerned about a price hike not just for the game console but for accessories too," shared Hidenori Tanaka, 55, a real estate company employee.
While some tariffs have been rolled back, uncertainty around U.S.-China trade relations keeps fears alive for global electronics markets, including gaming.
Nintendo Switch 2 Pricing
In Japan, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be priced at 49,980 yen (about $350 USD) for a Japanese-language-only version. In the United States, after a brief pause in pre-orders due to tariff worries, Nintendo confirmed the U.S. price at $449.99.
As of April 2025, the exchange rate stands at 1 USD = 143.67 yen, making it crucial for international buyers to watch currency trends and tariff developments closely.
Nintendo’s Legacy Continues
Since the launch of the original Switch in 2017, Nintendo has sold over 150 million units, revolutionizing its business and revitalizing its brand among new generations of gamers. With the Switch 2, Nintendo hopes to build on that success — and early signs suggest fans are more than ready.
Despite potential challenges ahead, the excitement for Switch 2 is palpable. Whether you’re racing through Mario Kart World or bouncing through Donkey Kong Bonanza, Nintendo’s next-generation console looks set to be another smash hit.
